Makita BO5041K 125mm Random Orbital Sander

This is an ideal tool for a hobbyist like myself, the expense is definitely worth the upgrade from a basic tool. I reckon it would be great for professionals as well.

There are two great features that don't usually come in this price category.

First is the speed setting. At low speed I was able to run a finishing pass that left absolutely no squiggle marks. None. I was amazed. And then I was also able to put a wooly bonnet on and get a wax polish at the lowest speed setting without wearing out the bonnet at all.

Then there is the pommel-style extra handle. When sanding a large flat piece this priceless. Being able to keep the tool level means I do not scratch the surface in the slightest, plus I reduce the vibration that runs up my wrist and forearm, and therefore fatigue. With my previous basic tool I got very tired after sanding, say, a tabletop. This one is no issue at all. This is where I think the pros will benefit greatly.

Absolutely worth the extra expense. A professional will quickly make that up in time saved, and a hobbyist will get through the tedium of sanding with far fewer mistakes.
